Regular Eye Examinations in County Durham
Our aim at Walkers Opticians is to promote and encourage optimum eye health while informing our customers on their specific requirements and all of the options available to them.
The importance of regular eye tests by qualified opticians cannot be over stated. In addition to potentially your improving quality of life, they can detect the presence of possibly serious eye diseases such as Glaucoma and macular degeneration. Many people are unaware of this but general health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure can also be identified during an eye test.
Your Eye Examination at Walkers Opticians, County Durham
There are a number of varied tests that we may perform, depending on our optician’s initial assessment of your individual situation and visual requirements. We will discuss with you any problems you may be experiencing with your eyesight. We also include your general health as some eye conditions will affect this. We also cover your work and leisure activities.
Refraction Testing and Oculomotor Balance
If you already wear glasses or lenses we will inspect these to see if they are still suitable for you. We will begin your eye test by evaluating your near vision [for reading] your distance vision [for driving or TV] and intermediate vision [for hobbies or computer work]. We check that your eye muscles are balanced and that you have comfortable vision at all distances.
Pupil Reflexes
Your pupils should react swiftly to light changes. If our opticians discover this is not the case it could be an indication of neurological problems. A quick and simple check for this is then carried out.
Intraocular Pressure
Customers around the age of 40 or people who have glaucoma history in the family may be given this test by our optician to discover the amount of pressure inside the eye. This is useful to help identify Glaucoma, which can lead to blindness if left untreated.
Visual Field Test
One of the most common signs of the development of Glaucoma can be losing your field of vision so where appropriate we will check your all around and peripheral vision.
Opthalmoscopy
This is an important part of your eye test as it evaluates the health and condition of your eyes and may help to identify diabetes, hypertension [high blood pressure], cataracts and macular degeneration. Ophthalmoscopy shows general health probelms if there are retinal changes - we always look for signs of high blood pressure and diabetes but cannot rule them out as they may be present at a level that has not resulted in any clinical changes.
Evaluation of Your Eyes & Eyesight
Once your eye test is complete our optician will give you a detailed overview of your eyesight and explain and discuss your needs and how we can best accommodate you.
