Walkers Opticians has been established in Durham since the 1950’s. As our Market Place address would suggest, we are located in the centre of Durham city, so we are very convenient to drop into whilst shopping in Durham. We are close to several Durham city car parks, we usually recommend the Prince Bishops  car park if you are travelling by car. Our laboratory is located in the Durham opticians practice, where we are able to turn around standard prescriptions quickly. Durham is also where our Zeiss i.Profiler facility is located. Please see Zeiss i.Profiler page for details

Walkers Opticians in Crook

The Walkers Opticians practice in Crook was established around the time of the First World War. For much of this time it was Bliss Opticians, run by Mr Bliss, a very well known and respected member of the Crook community. Mr Bliss sold his opticians practice to Walkers Opticians in 1980. Since then the practice has continued to thrive and has a strong base of local, regular customers.

Family Opticians - From Children to Seniors, Free Childrens’ Spectacles

Walkers is an extremely family friendly optician. We provide ongoing care from the very youngest member of the family, starting with our wonderful children’s spectacle range. We do in fact provide a range of free spectacles for children – our Lazer Junior range. Next we have the trendy teenage image conscious provision, followed by eye wear for the student or young professional, with our exclusive designer look. We can help Mum and Dad to chose the right spectacles to match their own taste and of course last but not least, we have a spectacle and lens range aimed primarily and the senior family members.

The Health of Your Children’s Eyes

Young eyes need to be tested regularly and cared for, as research shows that one in five school children have an undetected eye problem causing them to have difficulty in lessons and with other activities. The quality of your child’s vision is extremely important as 80% of a child’s learning occurs visually. A problem may be indicated by excessive blinking, squinting, looking very closely at books and TV and poor performance at school.

At Walkers Opticians we employ the latest techniques and equipment to detect problems at a very early age. Your child’s annual eye test is completely free under the NHS and if they need glasses you will receive help towards the cost of children’s spectacles. Our children’s spectacles are designed to withstand the everyday rough and tumble, have additions such as soft nose pads and spring hinges and are priced very attractively.

Age Related Eye Conditions

The need to take your eyesight seriously increases significantly as you get older. Most people will need reading glasses by the time they are 65. From age 40, eye conditions such as Glaucoma are more likely to develop and from 60 onward we see a greater likelihood of cataracts and macular degeneration.
While good eyesight is important at every age regular examinations are a priority for children and over 60's, as many problems can be prevented or treated if found at an early stage. As part of the routine eye examination at Walkers Opticians, all adults have a pressure check for glaucoma.

Here at Walkers Opticians, we welcome the opportunity to advise you about the health of your eyes at all stages of life.
